Anthony Chavez helped at least six people to safety during the Las Vegas shooting
He was known only as the “Red Hat Hero”, but that’s all social media needed to track down a man hailed as a hero for helping people escape the gunfire in las vegas last Sunday (October 1).
Those searching for Anthony Chavez wanted to thank him, but all they had to go on was group picture in which Chavez was sporting a distinctive red Albuquerque Ducks hat.
As it turns out, that’s all they needed to track him down using Facebook.
Chavez was in the front row of the country music concert when a gunman opened fire on the crowd from a room in a nearby hotel.
Amidst the chaos, he helped his girlfriend over a 1.2-metre-high fence, then himself, but he wasn’t done there and helped get at least six more people to safety.
The husband of one of the women he helped eventually tracked Chavez down and thanked him.
What did the “Red Hat Hero” have to say about his actions?
“I was able to get myself over, and several of the women around us, we kind of locked eyes and I said OK I need to help them. My girlfriend hid behind me in between some speakers and I just helped however many people I could.”
“The part where people are calling me a hero I don’t think I can accept that. I really think I was doing what came to me and what I needed to do,” he continued.
